ADVICE FOR PLUMBING EMERGENCIES

With some severe weather upon us in Derbyshire we thought it would be helpful to post some advice on what to do in emergencies such as frozen pipes, burst pipes and backed up boilers.  If in doubt please feel free to give us a call for advice or a call out!

Internal Burst Pipes or Leaks

Turn off your water supply at the stop tap.
If water is still leaking open all your cold water taps to drain the system. (Don’t turn on hot taps)
Turn your central heating system, boiler and any immersion heaters off.
Then call GFS on 07894 320869 or 07866 636070

Internal Frozen Pipes

Turn off your water supply at the stop tap.
Turn your central heating system, boiler and any immersion heaters off.
If the frozen pipe hasn’t split, thaw it out gently starting at the end nearest the tap, by applying warm hot-water-bottles.

If the frozen pipe has split, open all your cold water taps and flush your WC to drain the system. (Don’t turn on hot taps)

We are always available on 07894 320869 or 07866 636070 if you require any further assistance.

Boiler not working?

It is often the case that in very cold weather the cold water pipes feeding the boiler may freeze, or the ‘condensation pipe’ taking the natural condensation away from the boiler to an external drain may freeze.  In both cases the boiler will not work but it can be easily fixed if you can identify the frozen pipe (either to or from the boiler) and thaw it out by applying hot water bottles.
If in any doubt please do give us a call on 07894 320 869 or 07866 636070 and we’d be happy to help however we can!

Outhouses and External Taps

External pipe work is of course very likely to freeze in cold weather, so it is sensible to turn the water supply off on the isolation valves to any taps or appliances you have so that in the case of a burst there won’t be a huge amount of water leaked. (As opposed to mains pressure water firing out all over your property!)

If you haven’t already got isolation valves to your external taps and appliances it would be very sensible to have them fitted rather than risk an emergency situation.

Again for any advice please feel free to give us a call on 07894 320 869 or 07866 636070!

7 WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY IN YOUR HOME

1. Dripping taps waste up to 30 litres of water a day.  Fix them straight away or replace with spray pattern taps which use up to 80% less water than traditional taps.

2. Insulating your pipes will make them more efficient and protect against freezing in cold weather.

3. Upgrading your hot water cylinder to a pre-insulated model with a high recovery coil (heat exchanger) will make your hot water system more efficient.  Alternatively, fitting a new lagging jacket to your existing hot water cylinder will make it more efficient.

4. With a timer switch or programmer you could turn your heating and hot water on and off automatically, reducing energy waste and fuel bills.

5. Installing themostatic radiator valves will allow you to control the temperature in each room, independantly of your thermostat- so when the room reaches the desired temperature, the valve turns the radiator down.

6. Decreasing the temperature on your thermostat by just 1 degree can save 10% on your heating bill.

7. Installing an 'A' rated high efficiency boiler could cut your heating bills by up to 40% and you could even get the money spent on installing it back within 3 years.
